Largest Sixth Form College in the UK accelerates connectivity & cyber security with KHIPU, HPE Aruba Networking & Palo Alto Networks solution.

Providing state-of-the-art education facilities to around 5,000 students aged 16-18, Barton Peveril holds top spot as the largest sixth form college in the United Kingdom. Located in Eastleigh, Hampshire, the college campus is comprised of multiple buildings, including a recently developed £9.5 million Business, Law and Economics centre.

Meeting Increasing Demand.

With the college, its students, and over 400 staff members set to benefit from the college’s significant investment in new educational spaces, it was becoming clear that the campus’ outdated core network infrastructure would need to be addressed.

“Our core infrastructure was out of date by about 15 years and meant that we wouldn’t be getting the most out of our new building and the significant investment.”, said Charlie Davis, IT Manager at Barton Peveril. “The college had already approved the replacement of the kit, so, alongside KHIPU, we were working within tight timescale to procure, evaluate and implement the project before it became an issue for our users.”

“Although timescales for completion were tight, our KHIPU account manager was always available and willing to prioritise our needs.”

“When considering the newest building, we approached KHIPU to propose the most cuttingedge network possible – the latest technology from HPE Aruba, with the most powerful access points and networking, with the best-possible security.” Stated, Charlie.

The resulting KHIPU and HPE Aruba solution includes over 170 AP-635 access points and seven AP-565 external access points for seamless campus roaming, enabling staff and students to work and learn while moving freely around the grounds. “Although timescales for completion were tight, our KHIPU account manager was always available and willing to prioritise our needs.”, said Charlie. “Simply put, KHIPU listen to us. I feel that we have a strong relationship and that I can go to the KHIPU team with anything. The help from their engineers in terms of the installation, has been second-to-none – they really know what they are doing!”

Firewall Upgrade.

As part of the core network infrastructure project, the team at Barton Peveril were aware that their existing Palo Alto Networks firewalls would also need to be upgraded. “Once we’d completed the core network upgrade, and welcomed our students back to site, we noticed that the demand was causing us to ‘cap-out’ on our internet usage.” Explained Charlie.

“The next phase of the project was to upgrade both our ‘pipe’ and our firewalls.” After consulting with KHIPU and the technical team at Palo Alto Networks, Barton Peveril specified two Palo Alto PA-1420 firewalls to cope with the ever-growing demand on network bandwidth and to add further layers of cyber threat protection.

Speaking on the firewall upgrade and on his experiences working with KHIPU, Charlie commented: “As was the case throughout the core infrastructure project, another value add from KHIPU was the facilitation of discussions with the vendors.

These sessions with the technical teams from both HPE Aruba and Palo Alto Networks helped us to fully understand and benefit from the very latest feature sets on our technology choices and ensured that integration across the estate was faultless.

“The threat prevention that the Palo Alto’s offer us is fantastic. Not only this, but we have noticed a significant improvement in our bandwidth management – comfortably reaching 5.5GB on one of our busiest days.”

Joining the KHIPU Community SOC.

With their new core infrastructure, wireless network and upgraded Palo Alto firewalls fully operational, Barton Peveril Sixth Form College were keen to maintain the momentum, entering discussions with KHIPU around their next set of key projects.

Charlie and his team are acutely aware of the many challenges facing them, and the education sector more broadly, with cyber-attacks and breaches a common occurrence for colleges and universities around world.

Speaking on the next steps for the college, Charlie, said:

Our next milestone is to obtain our Cyber Essentials accreditation. we engaged the team at KHIPU to discuss a number of scenarios and options to help achieve this, which led us to opt for their 24×7 Security Operations Centre (SOC) service [SOC-in-a-BOX].

I believe that, as a sector, [Education] is now at a stage where 24×7 cyber threat protection is nothing short of essential. Institutions are being continuously targeted and, whilst we have a full team at Barton Peveril, many institutions are often understaffed and rarely have a dedicated cyber security engineer or specialist; this is where the [KHIPU] SOC comes in – acting as a seamless extension of your team around the clock!”
