Promoting and Implementing ‘Greener ICT’ - Remote Home Working Using Wireless Technology
“Wireless technology deployment used to transform efficiency of local services”
Having completed a number of Council wireless projects to enable secure and flexible remote working, a number of additional requirements have been identified to not only increase ‘home working’ but to also address ‘Green ICT’. These include;
- The ability to promote home working to different types of users.
- To enable an easy, secure and auditable method to gain access to council resources anywhere at anytime (without any re-configuration of the users device)
- Restrict and control if required, which devices connect to your network (Click here for further information)
- Provide a ‘one off’ cost effective (capital purchase) solution for mobile remote network access instead of using mobile phone carriers, which incurs on-going recurring costs
- Deliver additional services such as VoIP and Video over the Internet securely to the remote users to increase productivity without increasing costs (e.g. phone calls etc)
Our end to end solution, which has been deployed into a number of council environments including Dorset County Council, who have directly improved flexible working with wireless connectivity. For the Dorset County Council Case Study, please click here.
Our end to end solution provides the following key benefits;
- Cost effective solution that enables home users over a Wireless LAN, to work as if they were in the council, therefore access key resources whilst being managed by the Council infrastructure (e.g. access to websites managed by the Council’s systems).
- ‘Anytime, Anywhere’ access over the Internet using ‘Remote Access Point’ technology, without the need for ‘USB Dongles’, in-built GSM wireless cards.
- Reduced expenditure by using ‘one off’ costs for equipment instead of recurring costs such as for mobile phone/data charges
- Integrate with Council’s Voice System (if VoIP enabled), therefore deliver Voice services over the WWW via the Wireless connection.
- Helps towards Code of Connection compliance (CoCo) as a means of secure remote network access
- Advertise different SSID’s at the remote location; 1 for Council use and 1 for home use, separating and securing local data/traffic (i.e. web surfing locally) from Council data/traffic.
- Reduced overheads in supporting the home user, in that it’s a simple process for the user to connect to the Council network.
