Created on 25.7.2007

Paris, June 26, 2007 - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that the deployment of a secure and centrally managed Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for the Homerton College, UK, part of the University of Cambridge, has been completed. The WLAN was deployed to improve internal communications and give students, staff and conference delegates a more flexible working environment.

The installation was carried out by Alcatel-Lucent’s business partner Khipu Networks, and is based on Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniAccess Wireless LAN (WLAN) technology, integrated with Bradford Networks’ network access control solution ‘Bradford Campus Manager’. The new solution ensures the network is fully secured from unauthorised devices and enables Homerton College users to access the College network and the public internet from anywhere on campus, including the library, dining hall, teaching rooms, campus lawns and even the bar. The College anticipates that the new network will encourage stronger dialogue and collaboration between staff and students.

The solution allows the College to use the network as a competitive differentiator, attracting students requiring state-of-the-art technology in their everyday interactions. It also provides secure wireless access to the College network in all of the residence halls, where previously fixed access points had been needed in every room. The WLAN also attracts greater revenue opportunities for the College, as conference delegates, who use the network and campus facilities during vacation periods, are now able to use personal portable devices across the campus.

“The Alcatel-Lucent and Bradford Networks integrated solution provides our students and staff with high-speed, easy and secure access to university resources from a range of mobile devices, wherever they are on the campus,” said Tristan Warbey, computer officer at Homerton College. “By automatically identifying and authenticating users as they connect, the solution also keeps the network secure – a key issue with wireless networks.”

“The increasing need for mobility within end-user organisations is driving demand for secure WLAN solutions, giving us a great opportunity to work closely with Alcatel-Lucent and advise end-users on the best ways to meet their individual mobility requirements,” said Matt Ashman, commercial consultant within the education team at Khipu Networks.

“This contract underscores Alcatel-Lucent’s unique offering benefits based on its ease of use, competitive pricing and integration with the existing Bradford Networks’ network access control solution,” said Peter Tebbutt, regional support centre director for Alcatel-Lucent’s enterprise activities in the UK and Ireland. “Alcatel-Lucent is committed to helping the education sector increase interaction and collaboration among teaching staff and students, and improve efficiency through network transformation – allowing organisations like Homerton to use the network to its full potential.”

About Homerton College - www.homerton.cam.ac.uk

Homerton is one of the most attractive colleges in Cambridge, with a mixture of old and new buildings set in spacious wooded grounds away from the noisy centre of town. It is also one of the largest colleges in terms of student numbers, with a thriving community. Famous for training teachers in Cambridge and London for over 150 years, Homerton now offers most of the academic subjects studied in the University of Cambridge. All of its student accommodation has been either rebuilt or refurbished to a very high standard within the last ten years; it now boasts more en-suite rooms with internet connections than any other college in Cambridge. You can dine in a splendid gothic hall built in 1890, enjoy the dance studio, play squash and use the excellent computer facilities. It has a thriving Students Union with many different sports clubs and societies. Not all colleges can lay claim to founding a famous football club, yet every year Homerton students play against Leyton Orient for the Challenge Trophy in celebration of the founding of the club in 1881.
