In 2005, Information Services at the University of Nottingham, embarked on the process of finding a solution to meet the growing demands of securely administering their Student Network Service ( SNS ).
This year over 6,300 students in Nottingham's Halls of Residence registered on the SNS. In previous years the start of term was fraught with infected student PCs which did not have Anti-virus or critical updates applied. Some machines had no protection at all.
“Consequently there were periods when the student network was saturated with traffic generated by worms and viruses which seriously impaired performance and availability of the network,” explained Richard Smeeton, Head of Network & Systems Section.
“So much time and resources were consumed each start of academic year and after Christmas tracking and disinfecting students PC's that didn't have basic protection installed.” said Chris Tadman, IT Operations Team Leader.
Successful implementation of a leading solution ‘Bradford Campus Manager'
After analysing a number of alternative products, the University chose to partner with Khipu Networks, an established solutions provider for the Higher Education sector. Khipu proposed a security and policy enforcement solution called Campus Manager from Bradford Networks.
Working closely with Information Services at the University of Nottingham , Khipu designed, installed and commissioned Campus Manager which uses a network registration and quarantine solution to provide a Pre-Connection Health Check Service.
“Now any student equipment failing the check is put into quarantine to access the latest patches and virus protection updates”, explained Lynne Tucker, Director of IT Systems. She added “Students registering with the Student Network Service ( SNS ) are the first users to have their laptops checked using 'Campus Manager '. We plan to extend the service to protect laptops accessing the wireless network and plug-in datapoints in libraries and computer rooms.”
Chris Tadman concluded “The Campus Manager Implementation has been a great success. It has ensured each student PC that is attached to the SNS network is compliant with the University Information Security Policy, protected and safe from known viruses, spyware and Microsoft vulnerabilities. It has made a dramatic effect to improving network availability and performance to our customers”.
Following the successful installation of the system across the Student Network Services (SNS) supporting 6,500 users, the University recently upgraded their Campus Manager Solution to manage other areas across the Institution. The system now provides Network Access Control and Identity Management for 8,000 users and growing.
